Verse 50 in the Dhammapada

"Do not speak much useless words,

Much speaking brings trouble,

Keep your words true,

Then you will not suffer.”

Explanation:

This verse emphasizes the importance of speech in daily life. The Buddha taught that:

Do not speak much useless words: Words that do not bring benefits, do not help yourself and others, only waste time and can cause harm.

Talking too much can cause trouble: When we speak too much without thinking carefully, we can unintentionally hurt others or create trouble for ourselves.

Keep your words true: Words must be truthful, beneficial, constructive, come from a heart of compassion and wisdom.

People who know how to guard their words will not suffer: When we speak the right words, do not hurt anyone, do not create bad karma, we will have a peaceful mind, not regret or suffer the consequences of wrong words.

This verse reminds us to speak carefully, meaningfully and compassionately, helping to bring benefits to ourselves and everyone around us.
