Evolution is one of the most tested ideas in science
The evidence comes from multiple directions, all pointing to the same conclusion: life on Earth has changed and diversified over billions of years through a process known as evolution.
Fossils provide one of the clearest records. Layer by layer, they show how species have changed over time, including transitional forms that bridge major groups — evidence that modern organisms didn’t appear suddenly, but gradually evolved from earlier ones.
Then there’s genetics.
When scientists compare DNA across species, they find striking similarities. Humans share large portions of their genetic code with animals like mice, birds, and even fruit flies. This isn’t random — it reflects a shared ancestry, written directly into our cells.
But evolution isn’t just something from the distant past.
We can observe it happening today through natural selection. Bacteria evolve resistance to antibiotics. Insects adapt to pesticides. These changes happen over generations, driven by mutations and environmental pressures that favor certain traits over others.
Other processes — like genetic drift and recombination — also shape how populations change and diverge over time.
Together, fossils, DNA, and real-time observations all tell the same story.
Evolution is a framework that explains the diversity of life on Earth from the smallest microbes to every species alive today, including us.
