The universe is so vast that the light from many stars and galaxies has not yet reached us. Although the cosmos began with the Big Bang about 13.8 billion years ago, its true extent may be infinite.
Light travels at a finite speed, so we can only see objects whose emitted photons have had enough time to arrive at Earth. This creates the observable universe, a spherical region roughly 93 billion light-years in diameter.
Beyond this cosmic horizon lies a vast realm forever hidden from view because its light is still journeying across unimaginable distances.
The expansion of space itself stretches these paths even longer, with distant galaxies racing away faster over time.
Accelerating expansion fueled by dark energy means that much of the universe will remain permanently unreachable, its wonders locked behind an ever-growing veil. What we observe tonight through telescopes represents merely a fraction of all that exists.
Countless stars, galaxies, and possibly entire cosmic structures formed long ago continue emitting light that has not yet crossed the gulf to us.
This fundamental limit shapes our understanding of reality, highlighting both the grandeur and the inherent isolation of our cosmic vantage point.
Future observers may glimpse slightly more as additional light arrives, yet the majority of the universe stays eternally beyond our grasp.
