Parenthood

In Buddha’s teaching, we learn that all relationships arise from causes and conditions.

Parenthood is no exception. As parents, it is not easy when a child comes into our lives carrying heavy karmic conditions. At times, it may feel as though they are here to collect karmic debt, bringing challenges, exhaustion, and heartache.

Yet the Buddha reminds us that karma is not punishment, it is simply the unfolding of past causes meeting present conditions. A difficult child is not an enemy, nor a burden to resent, but a teacher in disguise. Through them, we are invited to practice patience, compassion, endurance and selflessness at a deeper level.

When we respond with anger, we add to the cycle. When we respond with understanding and loving-kindness, we slowly dissolve old karma and plant new wholesome seeds. This path is painful at times, but it is also profound opportunity for growth, for both parent and child.

To raise such a child is not failure; it is practice.

To stay loving when it is hardest is true cultivation.

To continue with compassion, even when the heart is tired, is walking the Buddha’s path.

May wisdom guide our actions, may compassion soften our hearts and may all karmic ties gradually be transformed into understanding and peace.
