"Ley lines" primarily refer to two concepts: one, an archaeological theory that describes imaginary alignments between historic and prehistoric sites in the landscape, and the other, the idea in popular culture and spirituality of invisible energy networks crisscrossing the Earth, used for magic or transportation in fictional worlds.
Archaeological and Pseudoscientific Perspective
Origin of the Term: The concept was popularized by Alfred Watkins in 1921, who observed alignments of ancient monuments and structures in the British landscape and attributed them to prehistoric routes.
Theory: The original idea was that these "ley lines" were ancient, aligned paths for line-of-sight navigation, but over time, this morphed into a theory that posits that they are Earth energies.
