The Buddha’s explanation of the universePt 1: When most people think of Buddhism, they immediately think of compassion, peace, and kindness. But the teachings go so much deeper than that. they explore the exact mechanics of reality, the physics of the universe, and even what happens at death.

Breaking down this 300+ page book The Buddha’s Explanation of the Universe by C.P Ranasinghe into easy infographics to help myself and others understand.

Due to its dense content, it will take many posts, but I aim to make complex ideas accessible to everyone.

The concepts in this book aren't just modern interpretations, they are drawn directly from the Abhidhamma Pitaka (the third and most profound "basket" of the original Pali Tripitaka).

Specifically, the knowledge comes from the seven ancient texts collectively known as the Satta Pakarana

Before we go deeper, the introduction of the book gives two fantastic pieces of advice

It's not about magic: It is a common mistake to think the Abhidhamma is a study of the supernatural. It is actually a systematic study of natural phenomena exactly as they are, dealing specifically with the science of mind (*nāma*) and matter (*rūpa*).

Don't just take its word for it: The Buddha emphasized that we shouldn't get "enslaved by words" or accept these teachings on mere faith. The true purpose of these concepts is to stimulate your mind to develop deep, direct, and concentrated thought.

Here is a quick breakdown of what’s covered in today's infographic:

1. The Illusion of a Solid World: Physical matter isn't actually solid; it is made of tiny units of energy flashing in and out of existence billions of times a second.

2. The Flow of the Mind: Your mind isn't one solid thing either. It is an incredibly fast-moving stream of individual thoughts that observes and directs the physical body.

3. Unlocking Mental Energy: We waste massive amounts of natural mental energy just keeping our physical bodies running. Meditation helps unlock and harness that wasted power.

4. Where the Mind Lives: Your mind exists throughout your entire body, but the "signal" is strongest in your sense organs (eyes, skin) and weakest in parts like your hair and nails.

 5. The Two Directions of Infinity: Infinity works outward (unending space and time) and inward (any tiny point in space or split-second of time can be divided forever).

 6. You Are the Center of Everywhere: Because the universe has no edge, exactly where you are sitting is the center of the universe. Because time has no end, "Right Now" is the exact center of time.

 7. The Gaps in Reality: Reality flashes like a strobe light. Between every single micro-moment of thought or matter, there is an invisible, tiny gap of pure nothingness.

Take a look at the attached infographic, and let me know which concept blows your mind the most!
